Important account of an American Diplomatic expedition to the Far East. Roberts [1784-1836] lost his family fortune in shipping ventures. After travelling abroad, including a visit to Zanzibar, he entered the diplomatic service & wes sent as an Envoy to the Middle & Far East. He landed at Muscat in Oman & the treaty he negotiated there between the USA & Oman remained current until 1958. He carried on visiting China, Japan & Siam. His work was unfinished in the Orient after he contracted a fever in Siam. Roberts died in & is buried in Macau. Scarce.
