Paperback, F. c+604pp, 4 b/w maps, index, a nice fine copy. New. A New edition of Cherry Gerrard's Polar classic, often cited as the best ture life adventure ever written. Gerrard joined the R F Scotts 1910 - 13 Antarctic expedition only after 3 attempts at selection. Once in the Polar area he & Wilson & Bowers set of to collect Penguin Eggs which were located some 60 miles from the base camp at Cape Evans. it was this journey, made during the winter which Cherry Garrard was to call the 'Worst Journey In The World'. At one point, trapped by a blizzard the three were sure the end was near. But they survived. Bowers & Wilson later joined Scott on his ill fated attempt to reach the South Pole. Cherry Gerrard was deeply affected by the failure of the group to return & in particular the death of his egg collecting companions. Wracked by depression for the rest of his life [ had enough been done to help Scott and the others ] he wrote this book as a way of trying to come to terms with the strains placed upon him.
