Sprinkled cloth gilt, VG. xx+361-824pp, series title page ( The Works of Sir William Stirling Maxwell ) 10 woodcut illustrations, 12 plates which appear twice in the work - once as a steel engraving & once as a mezzotint giving 24 plates in total, paper spine label in good order, cloth is steel blue with red sprinkled decoration, armorials in gilt on the upper cover, Large paper edition, limited to 415 copies ( 265 for England & 150 for the USA ) of which this is copy 20. Small split to the cloth at the head of the rear hinge, otherwise an attractive, solid copy, endpapers foxed & yellowed, internally fine. Ex Libris Edward Armitage with his bookplate. Second volume in Sir William Stirling Maxwell's history of Spanish paintingm, this volume covering the arts in the later part of the reign of Philip II to the early reign of Philip IV. Originally published in 1848.
