Decorated cloth, VG. 6 volumes, xvi+578pp, x+265pp, x+450pp, xii+423pp, xii+398pp, x+405pp, coloured frontis to each volume, grand total of 103 b/w plates & 290 text vignettes by John Leech & W T Maud ( 'Hawbucks Grange' only ) attractively bound with the upper board of each volume showing a huntsman on his galloping steed riding under an upturned horseshoe, cloth evenly rubbed at the head & tail of the spines, light rubbing to the boards, repaired split to the cloth at the base of the spine on the rear hinge of 'Mr Sponge', new matching endpapers to 'Handley' and repairs to the gutter of the frontis & one page in the prelims, slightly ragged edge to a few pages in 'Ringlets' where the pages have been opened carelessly, but overall an attractive set in bright unmarked cloth. A set of 6 novels by the popular sporting author Robert Smith Surtees [ 1791 - 1834 ]. A huntsman himself his novels contain a mix of broad caricature, farce, humor, minutely observed depictions of the manners & customs of the hunt and the rich vocabulary of the hunting & horse racing scene. A fine writer & a minor Dickens, his works detail a world soon to be lost with the advent of the railways & railway travel to the shires.
