Reed, Rebecca Theresa Narrative Of Six Months' Residence In A Convent George Gallie, 99 Buchanan St, Glasgow 1835 reprint. Original cloth, G+. xii+106pp, front endpaper removed, ink ownership signature on the pastedown, occasional foxing to the pages, cloth rubbed & bumped, a fair copy. Early British printing of a book, which along with that of Maria Monk, caused a sensation in America when first published. The book puports to be an expose of life in a Roman Catholic convent on Mount Benedict, Charlestown, Massachusetts. Reed claims that protestant girls, attending a school at the convent were forced into Catholicism, with dire consequences for those who disobeyed. The book found an eager audience as anti Catholic sentiment in the Boston area was high, resulting in an rioting mob burning down the convent in August 1834. Price:
