Leys, Simon [ Ryckmans, Pierre ] The Wreck Of The Batavia [with] Prosper Thunder's Mouth Press 2006 1st edition. Boards, dj, F/F. xvi+111pp, b/w illustrations, a fine copy in a fine dustjacket. New. Brief account of the Batavia, which in 1629 went down some 40 miles of the Western Coast of Australia on the Houtman Abrolhos. Although only about 40 of the 340 aboard drowned it was after the Commander left the stricken survivors that their real problems began. One of the survivors, Jeronimus Cornelisz - who had earlier attempted to mutiny the crew - began to murder the survivors who he considered opponents. Eventually the Commander François Pelsaert returned and saved the survivors. Cornelisz & his henchmen paying with their lives. The episode struck a chord in Europe equivalent to the loss of the Titanic. Price:
