Henry Rutgers Marshall [1852-1927], was an architect & psychologist, who in his aesthetic theory stated that pain & pleasure should not be held as separate entities [ which was a popular neurological theory in the 1890s]. He stated that pain and pleasure were extremes of the same experience. Marshall's was an introspective psychology, which he used in his architecture criticism and support of the City Beautiful ideal.
