Half calf, G+. iv+450pp, pages yellowed & a little foxed, binding rubbed along the edges, upper hinge held by the cords, a good reading copy. Tale of a painter who is torn between his mistress & muse, a Cornish girl of wild beauty & his wife. The two women are portrayed as opposites, but the painter cannot come to terms with his different love for both & commits suicide. The work was controversial on its publication in 1890 & was a direct influence on Hardy's 'Jude to Obscure'.
