Detailed account of the Flemish artist Francois Balthazar Solvyns who travelled to the East & in a series of etchings provided Europe with a compelling view of India & its Inhabitants. Arriving in India in 1791 & began plans to produce a body of 250 images with the intention of publishing them. This he did but the work was not wekll recieved. He returned to Europe, reworked the entire portfolio & republished it with 288 images , again to commercial faliure. The work represents a unique view of India in the 1790's. Most of the images from Solvyns two books are reproduced.
