Extremely popular religious work, to which Dr Johnson conceded, ‘infidelity has never been able to fabricate a specious answer’ to it. George Lyttelton, First Baron Lyttelton [ 1709 – 1773 ] Whig politician, poet & patron of the arts, Lyttleton being on good terms with Pope, Thompson & Fielding. His two great passions Patriotism to England & Epic Verse. Up until the publication of this work in 1747 he had kept his religious beliefs to himself but upheavals in his personal life may have inspired him to seek solance in religion.
