Full contemporary blind stamped & ruled calf, G+. [viii]+lxxiv+[x]+710+22pp, leather scuffed & upper board near detached, large single worm hole which affects the first 20 pages just affecting the legibility & then continues through most of the text block as a small hole inbetween two lines of text for the most of its depth, otherwise a good copy in need of a little TLC which has good wide margins. Bookplate of Charles Grave Hudson. Collected Martyrology which was complied by the Benedictine Monk Thierry Ruinart [ 1657 - 1709 ]. A Maurist who studied under the tutellage of Jean Madillon he travelled widely to complete & collect information for this work which gives much information on the First Christian Martyrs. In the Introduction to this work Ruinart counters the claim made by Henry Dodwell that there had in fact been very few such Martyrs in the early days of the Christian Church. A First edition on an Important work which went through many editions, reprinted across Europe. Hudson, of Wanlip Hall in Leicestershire, noted bibliophile & a Director of the South Sea Company.
