Dobson, Susannah The Life Of Petrarch. Collected From Memoire Pour La Vie De Petrarch [ 2 volumes complete ] Printed for the author, and Sold by J Dodsley, in Pall Mall, J Buckland, In Pater Noster Row, and T Becket, in the Strand 1776 2nd edition. Full contemporary calf, G+. 2 volumes, xxx+544+[11]pp, [ii]+556+[11]pp, engraved frontis to volume I, index to each volume, complete with initial & final blanks, leather rather rubbed, espsecially to the spine, hinges cracked with the upper board of volume I detached, text block of both volumes clean & bright, a nice, if in worn bindings, set. The life of Petrarch translated from the Controverial French book 'Mémoires pour la vie de François Pétrarque' by the Abbe De Sade. The book not only re-popularized Petrarch in England, but made Dobson a popular figure in her own right. This work was praised by several critics including Samuel Johnson who called it not a translation but an original work in it' own right.
