Lytton, Sir Edward Bulwer [ Lord Lytton ] Eugene Aram - A Tale George Routledge 1854 reprint. Cloth, VG. xxiv+296pp, b/w frontis by Hablot K Browne, cloth a little rubbed & bumped, attractive gilt spine, small water stain to the top L corner of the frontis, Armorial bookplate on the pastedown obscuring the list of titles in Routledge's 'Standard Edition' of the works of Lytton. A nice copy. One of Lytton's sympathetic studies of the criminal - in this case a murderer executed in 1759. Eugene Aram was a lexicographer & academic who was eventually found guilty of the murder of a friend over property. Lytton used the case as the basis for a story of a romantic figure torn between violence and visionary ideals. Price:
