Half morocco over cloth, G. 46 map sheets coloured to the outline, ( frontis of the polar regions + 45 sheets as per contents ) +105pp index, split to sheet 5 ( S England ) extending half the fold, folding flap of sheet 16 ( Germany ) creased, ink splash to sheet 34 ( Africa ) just inside the map margin, sheets 1 ( World ) 11 ( Basin of the Mediterranean ) & 23 ( Asia ) have neat marginalia giving the details of a World trip undertaken by persons unknown in 1881, many of the hinges holding the maps in place have splits making the sheets loose with a few sheets having related 1 inch split at the base of the sheets, spine largely missing & upper board crudely repaired with gummed kraft with a second strip of gummed kraft securing the contents at sheet 2, a working copy with the maps in nice clean condition. Sheet size is 14.5 inches x 12.5 inches. Nicely executed folio atlas containing 46 detailed maps of the World. Alexander Keith Johnston [ 1804 - 1871 ] Scottish geographer and cartographer.
