1 Shorthouse, J A John Inglesant - A Romance
Macmillan & Co 1881 1st trade edition. 
Red cloth, VG+. 2 volumes, vi+266pp, 298pp, spines dulled, pages un opened, a near fine copy, bookplate of Duff Cooper. The first edition, which was privately printed by the author at his wifes insistance, was printed in a run of 100 copies the year before. it came to the attention of the Macmillans who printed the book in a large edition for a wider audience. Joseph Henry Shorthouse [ 1834 - 1903 ] was a Shropshire Quaker & chemist & he took some 10 years to write this novel, his first & best. Set in the time of Charles the First it deals with Victorian problems within the Anglican & Catholic Church, touching on issues close to the Oxford movement. Duff Cooper [1890 - 1954], First Viscount Norwich, First Lord of the Admiralty, Minister of Information under Churchill to whom he was a close friend, & notable MP.
