Decorated cloth gilt, VG. xii+215pp, colour frontis, 7 colour plates, 169 b/w illustrations, index, spine slightly chipped at the head & tail of the spine which is also a little browned, internally a nice copy. Charming & whimsical book owing largely to the many pen & ink illustrations by James Affleck Shepherd [ 1867 - 1931 ]. A self taught cartoonist he is chiefly remembered for his comic drawings of birds & animals, all in anthropomorphic style. The text describes animal & insect life over the course of a year as if human in character - 'The wasp is an intelligent fellow, as witness the discretion which bids him to come out of a hole in pear or plum business end first'.
