Originally published in 1590 [ in what would seem to be a lost edition ]. Barrow was at first a wayward young man following the Royal Court. After hearing a sermon her retired to the country to follow through meditation the stricktest form of Puritanism. He then fell in with John Greenwood the Separatist leader. He was imprisoned as was Greenwood in 1586 [ Barrowe detained whilst on a visit to Greenwood ] and it was there where Barrowe wrote his many works in defence of Separatism. Despite the efforts of Whitgift to silence him the books were smuggled out of prison & printed in the Netherlands. Eventually on a charge of 'devising and circulating seditious books' Barrowe & Greenwood were hanged in 1593. This is a 1707 edition of one of Barrowe's most important works. Price:

Cloth, VG. x+317pp, 4pp b/w plates, text figs, index, 1 plates stained, index & the margins to several pp rather foxed, cloth a little marked to the upper cover, but still a nice copy. Booksellers ticket of H K Lewis, 136 Gower Street on the pastedown. Cambridge Psychological Library. Sir Frederic Charles Bartlett [ 1886 - 1969 ] psychologist & one of the fore runners of cognitive psychology who is 'best-known for this work, in which he reported a lengthy series of experiments on perception and on memory, which showed that human awareness of events was both selective and constructive: much which struck the eye was never seen or remembered, and conversely a great deal was thought to have been perceived or recalled which had not in fact occurred. This, as well as the choice of the items which were correctly reported, showed that perception and remembering were controlled by some process sensitive to the purposes and interests of the individual concerned. This line of thought departed from current orthodoxies, which, whether behaviourist or gestaltist, saw human awareness as passively determined by the pattern of present events or of past experience. Though they owed something to the work of Rivers, Myers, James Ward, whom he had known in Cambridge, and the neurologist Henry Head, Bartlett's ideas largely originated with his own observation of human behaviour, and Remembering is copiously illustrated with cases in which Africans had selectively remembered events of little importance to Britons or vice versa'.
